Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color in Deepest Cherry Review and Pics

maybelline deepest cherry

Target, $4.99

Is it tacky that I shot this photo after I had already used the lipstick? I took another one before I tried it, but it didn’t come out like I was hoping, so I went for round two. Just pretend this is totally new and you can’t tell the angle I apply my lipstick.

Shhhh….just pretend…shhh…..there you go….mama’s got you….

I have been ON these Maybelline lipsticks for the last six months, or so. They’re so cheap, and shockingly luxe! The coverage is always great, and they’re so moisturizing and creamy, they’re totally comfortable to wear. I’ve never been so impressed by a drugstore brand. Great work, Maybelline! Keep it up!

I grabbed Darkest Cherry because I wanted a burgundy sort of color that was less intense than my OCC Lip Tar. My Lip Tar is great, but they’re not therapeutic in any way, and sometimes, I just don’t feel up to fussing with that little brush. Just let me slap it on!!

Deepest Cherry is a perfectly vampy, oxblood color. It doesn’t really skew purple or pink, it’s a pretty solid reddish brown; it’s lovely for Fall/Winter. It gives me so many 90s feelings though! I’m not saying I have to fight the urge to use a brown liner with this, but I’ve thought about it.

Jason on my hair like this: “It looks like Helena Bonham Carter!”

This color is so gorgeous, right?! It’s dark but not so dark you look like you fell out of The Craft. Like I said, the formula is amazing. A lot of colors in this family can apply patchy and uneven, but this one is a dream. It slides right on without any tugging or skipping, and it doesn’t leave any lines when you press your lips together.

NO TOUCHING!

The wear time is pretty average, a few hours without eating or drinking, but, that’s a fair trade when you get so much hydration. I love how my lips feel when I wear these lipsticks. They’re really great, and I can’t stop buying them!! THANK GOD they’re so cheap, or I’d be in some real trouble. Maybelline is coming out with a range of nude colors in this line, and I can’t wait to get my hands on them!

As a special bonus, here’s a better picture of my bee pins:

bee pins

I figured you’d want to see! They’re so cute, I can’t stand it!! They were a birthday gift from a good friend who was genius enough to scope out my Pinterest page for ideas. Whenever I think my hair needs a little something extra, I just pop in my bee pins, sit back, and let the compliments roll in.

Buy Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color in Deepest Cherry at Ulta, Target, drugstore.com, and I don’t know, anywhere you buy tampons, probably.

Coastal Scents Classic Fan Brush & Classic Tapered Kabuki Brush

coastal scents brushes

Top: Classic Fan Natural, Bottom: Classic Tapered Kabuki Stick Natural

I’d never tried anything from Coastal Scents before I got these brushes. I’d actually never even HEARD of Coastal Scents before this last year. I somehow stumbled upon THE DOPPELGÄNGER, and she frequently used shadows from Coastal Scents, so I took a look.

Wait. Did you go and look at THE DOPPELGÄNGER? Please. Do yourself a favor, and take a look at what she does. Her photos, her styling, her makeup, her everything is so gorgeous, it’s sick.

Anyways! Seeing the prices at Coastal Scents made it hard to pass up the opportunity to try out their products. I placed my order during their Black Friday sale; I paid $2.48 for the fan brush, and $6.48 for the kabuki brush. Crazy, right? Also seems suspicious, right? Suspiciously cheap. Like, a brace yourself for “you get what you pay for!” situation.

My order did take a little while to arrive, but, since most of the things I’ve read about Coastal Scents says they ship quickly, I’m chalking that up to a Black Friday pileup. When my order came in, I was really, REALLY impressed by the weight of the brushes. They don’t feel cheap, they feel solid. The bristles are thick, soft, and fluffy. I gave the brushes a good washing, and they held up really well without any changes to the bristles. At first, I did experience a very minor amount of shedding, but that seems to have stopped. Honestly, I’ve seen worse shedding from some MAC brushes.

The Classic Fan Natural brush was shockingly large and full. I’ve been using it as a really effective finishing brush to pop a little highlighting powder on my cheekbones, or to give my face one last pass with my HD finishing powder. It’s also great for brushing away any eyeshadow fallout you might have on your cheeks. Just sweeps it right off!

The Natural Tapered Kabuki Stick brush was also more substantial than I expected. The full, tapered brush is perfect for contouring and blending. I use it with both liquid and powder contour colors with equally great results. I knew my contouring was on point with this brush when my grandma said to me, “I can tell you’re losing weight. I can see it in your face.” My grandma does NOT hand out those “you look thinner” compliments unless she really thinks it’s true, so, JOKE’S ON YOU, NANA. I have not lost weight, I ate 3 cookies for 4th Meal last night.

Overall, I’m super happy with my brush purchase. The quality is great, and the prices are crazy! Right now, Coastal Scents is having a 40% off everything New Year’s sale. Today is the last day, but you can still get both of these brushes. I’ve found that buying and using new brushes is a great way to improve your application skills. You can learn how to get better by experimenting with new tools! Plus, hello, super fun! These prices are also good if there is a technique or type of brush you’ve been curious about, but you’ve been hesitant to spend the money. Just be sure to always wash and thoroughly dry new brushes before using them!

***UPDATE*** Both of these brushes are shedding, with the Kabuki brush being the biggest offender. I’m still using them, but I expect more shedding with each wash.

Black Friday Spoils!

I’m not a black Friday shopper. Going to stand in line in the cold, after I’ve stuffed myself with Thanksgiving sounds so terrible. I can only assume that the entire area out in front of Best Buy, on Thursday night, smells like turkey farts. Maybe some people are into that kind of thing, but I ain’t. It doesn’t sound fun, it sounds like my nightmare. So, yeah. I won’t do that.

What I will do is set my alarm for 5:45 AM, drop my phone trying to shut off the alarm, get out of bed, stumble into my office, and fight other beauty aficionados online for a piece of a limited supply of heavily discounted lipstick. All with my boobs out. That’s what I did on Friday morning, and I was able to score one of Urban Decay’s insane black Friday deals. They had a bundle of six of their gorgeous Revolution lipsticks on sale for $50!! That’s $132 worth of lipstick for $50!! I’m getting lightheaded just remembering it. Apparently, there was a super short supply of this deal. I don’t know how I was able to make it happen, but I did. I’m like one of those people at Target who manages to get one of the two $60 big screen TVs, right? Everyone tries to get them, but nobody can get them. Well, I got the makeup equivalent of that. Eat it, everyone else! I’m a champion! Also, I’m a sore winner. Everyone else doesn’t have to eat it, but I’m still a champion. I actually do feel bad for the people who weren’t able to get this bundle. I know what that feels like, it’s frustrating.

I also got a TON of stuff from Coastal Scents. I haven’t tried anything from them yet, but everyone else seems to be a fan. I picked up a bunch of 99 cent eyeshadows, discounted brushes, and a palette to hold the shadows. That sale is still going on. Everything on their site is 50% off. So, it’s a good time to grab crazy colored shadows you might not risk otherwise and stock up on brushes.

Floss Gloss was having a sale on Friday night, and I was finally able to pick up their Selena tribute color! I’ve been whimpering about this polish ever since they released it a couple weeks ago. I can’t wait to try it! They’re having a Cyber Monday sale today, so if you’ve been a fan of any of the colors I’ve swatched here, today is a good day to grab them for 30% off.

Whew! I was on a rampage! My credit card is smoking! Look for alllll this and more coming up soon! Also, look for my beautiful face shining upon all of you when I get all this new stuff in. I can’t wait for it to start showing up. The FedEx truck pulls up, and I get goosebumps. In my bra. Haha! Just kidding! I’m not wearing a bra! DOWN WITH BIG UNDERWIRE!

Maybelline Color Elixir Lipgloss in Vision in Violet Review & Photos

maybelline elixir vision in violet

Vision in Violet, Target, $6.99

I know I’ve been on a lip color kick lately. I know this. I just can’t help myself! I love lip stuff! Lipstick is mostly my jam, because I HATE getting my hair stuck in a sticky lipgloss pout. But, BUT….this new lipgloss from Maybelline has me rethinking my lip life choices.

Maybelline has really stepped up the drugstore lip game as of late. After I loved their Vivids line, I was really excited to try out this Color Elixir line. Maybelline Color Elixir Lipgloss is a FABULOUS lip product. It has pigmentation like lipstick, slides on like lipgloss, and hydrates like a lip balm. The gloss feels cushiony without feeling too sticky. It does leave a little bit of transfer lines when you press your lips together, but I’ve found that after the gloss sits on your lips for a few minutes, that problem sort of goes away. Wear time isn’t crazy long, but when a gloss feels this good to apply, that’s ok! The wand’s mega soft tip makes for easy, precise application, and the color has a slight perfume smell that I actually like. I usually hate that kind of thing, but this one smells really good! It reminds me of something, and I can’t place it. It’s making me slightly crazy, but I’ll figure it out. Don’t worry.

Indoors and in the sun.

I picked up this particular color, because of course I did. I pass by lip displays, I go into a trance, and my hands act on their own; just grabbing all the purple lip products. When I come to, they’re in my basket, and I’m like, “YEAH. GOOD WORK, ME!” Then, I move on to semi-consciously buying thousands of nail polishes that I’ll never wear. I might have a problem. Well, I guess it’s not a problem for me. I like it.

Model mouth, civilian hair.

I freaking love this color. Vision in Violet is a sort of pink, orchid purple. It’s bright, it’s gorgeous, it’s eye catching! I wore it out running errands with a friend who’s colorblind, and he said, “Whoa! That lipstick is PURPLE!” I was like, hell yeah, it is! So, it healed him. My beautiful, bright, shiny mouth healed his colorblindness, and now his whole life is so much better all because I can’t stop buying lipgloss. HALLELOO!

The price on these colors is great, and totally worth it. Even when they wear down, and don’t look as glossy, the color is still really pretty. Also, I did not get a bunch of hair caught in my lips. That’s the worst, because then I’m walking around all unaware about the lashes of lipgloss color flicked all around my mouth and cheeks by my idiot, unruly hair. I can’t have that. I gotta keep rep, bro!

Pick up these colors at Ulta, Target, and most likely wherever else you can buy a better than usual array of drugstore cosmetics. CVS, probably? Yeah, get some ice cream while you’re at it.

OCC Lip Tar All-Star Mini x 4 Set: Anime & Black Dahlia

Screen Shot 2013-11-06 at 5.32.04 PM

Sephora, $20

Yesterday, I told you about this exclusive to Sephora set of OCC Lip Tars.  Four of OCC’s amazing Lip Tars in the perfect size, at a great price. Long wearing, deeply pigmented, super sexy, ultra awesome liquid lipstick for only $20!

occ lip tar sampler

I showed you the neutral pink and the primary red yesterday. Let’s finish up the set!

occ lip tar set arm swatch 2

Anime is a hot, blue based fuchsia, so I was in love right away. It’s a vibrant, bubblegum pink that’s eye catching and bright.

occ lip tar set anime

Anime has great coverage, and it doesn’t crease or show lines when you press your lips together. The color was easy to work with, it applied beautifully and left a pretty stain. I loved this color! I definitely see myself wearing it often. A bright lip like this is more wearable than people think. It looks pretty and unobtrusive when you pair it with a light eye.

Black Dahlia is a deep, blackened red. It’s a beautiful wine color that’s great for fall and winter. I was super into this color, and it inspired me to create a whole witchy look.

occ lip tar set black dahlia

DO YOU LOVE IT?! I love it! It looks so much darker in the tube, but on the lip, it was much lighter. Black Dahlia was the most difficult to work with out of the set. The color moves around quite a bit, and it will settle into lines and cracks. A little patience and a steady hand with the little brush will get you through. Remember dark colors will make your lips look smaller. If this is a concern for you, blot the color down and/or use a concealer or highlighter color on your cupid’s bow, above your lips, to make your lips look fuller.

To get the best results out of your Lip Tars, be sure to prep your lips before you wear them. You’ll get a smoother application and better wear time if your lips are lookin’ and feelin’ right.  I try to keep my lips prepped at all times. You never know when you’re going to be in an emergency that calls for your well hydrated and exfoliated lips to look on point! YOU LITERALLY NEVER KNOW.

I figured out a way to show scale! DUH!

I think this set is a really great buy. Crazy long wearing, you only need a tiny amount, and the price all combine to make an amazing deal. This is an excellent starter set for anyone new to OCC’s Lip Tars. I’m totally thrilled they made it, and I hope they do the entire Lip Tar collection in this size!

OCC Lip Tar All-Star Mini x 4 Set: Memento & NSFW

Screen Shot 2013-11-06 at 5.32.04 PM

Sephora, $20

Well, this is freaking brilliant.

This set is proof positive that dreams really do come true! Ever since I bought my first Lip Tar, I’ve wished for a smaller, cheaper tube. The pigment in their formula is so intense, a tiny bit goes a really long way! How was I ever going to finish a tube?

occ lip tar sampler

L-R: Memento, NSFW, Anime, Black Dahlia

The tubes in this set are small, 0.08 oz each, and they’re exactly what I wanted! Large enough to be useful, but small enough to feel like I didn’t pay for a ton of wasted product. I’m trying to show scale here with my little paw, but, you have no idea how big my hands are! Let me just say that the iPhone is almost getting too tall for my hands now. Does that help? The colors are good for a wide range of looks, and I think they show the vibrancy of the OCC Lip Tar formula really well. This set is a Sephora exclusive, and at $20 for four small tubes, when a full size tube is $18, it’s a really great deal.

To me, these four colors seem really accessible – they’re a good choice for anyone new to the line. They might seem really bright, but they can be easily blotted down. Besides, come on! Live a little! Are you going to go your whole life without wearing some insane lipstick? Brother, that ain’t livin’.

We’ll do two colors today, and two colors tomorrow. Starting with, what I think, are the two most useful colors, Memento and NSFW.

occ lip tar set swatch 1

Memento is a neutral, medium pink/plum. It’s bright, and sweet, and it would be a really beautiful day to day color.

occ lip tar sampler 1

You could wear this color with so many looks, in so many different settings. It’s versatile, and the most wearable of the four colors.

NSFW is a balanced, true primary red. This color means business and it is GORGEOUS. I have a super special place in my heart for red lipstick, and NSFW is about as straight up red lipstick as it gets.

occ lip tar sampler 2

Red lipstick makes me feel like everyone should look at me. ALL HAIL MY POWER COLOR. Red lipstick is my can of spinach. I put it on, and my beauty muscles pump up! I even commandeered my own attention in the mirror in this color. I’ll tell you this, I was very compelled to take a ton of pictures of myself wearing NSFW.

occ lip tar sampler diptic

ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE ME.

Let she who is without a thousand pictures of her own face in her phone cast the first stone. There’s a reason that self facing camera is there, ok?

As usual, you’ll get hours of wear time from these Lip Tars. They stain like crazy, so if you don’t use a slow and steady hand WITH the recommended tiny bead of product, you could very easily end up looking like some dirty, Kool-Aid mouthed hillbilly child. That’s not a cute look. We want super sexy confidence power mouth, not “nobody cleans my face and I think Kool-Aid is the same as juice” mouth.

Part two tomorrow!
